*** YOU’RE SO COOL PLAYLIST HERE ***
Finally a reason to compile playlists and explain why I’ve chosen each track!
It’s long, and not particularly well written, but I needed a reason to start writing again.
Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll - Ian Dury and the Blockheads
My Dad introduced me to Ian Dury and the Blockheads when I was a kid, they were the first band he ever saw live. I remember seeing them on Top of the Pops 2 or something similar and thinking Ian Dury must be cool because he was wearing sunglasses indoors! Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick was always my favourite, but Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll are meant to be cooler than sticks right?
50p - Dirty Revolution
Dirty Revolution don’t know what it takes to be celebrities or gangsters, and that’s cool in my book. If that wasn’t enough they also have bigger bums that Britney Spears and harder mums that 50 cents’. The song pretty much explains why it’s cool within itself, I barely need to write this description it’s that cool!
Burn Bridges - The Grates (I’m not sure everyone can listen on spotify, I have it on my computer, so here’s a youtube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bbxa6j-WXMs)
The Grates are an awesome band from Australia, whose support set was so cool I can remember it far more vividly than The Fratellis’ who followed them who I’d paid to see. Apart from that, having the courage to consciously burn your bridges with people makes you feels amazing - I can only really relate it to quitting a really crappy job, but seeing that metaphorical wood turn to ash really did make me feel cool!
I Love It - Icona Pop
From burning bridges to crashing your car into bridges. “I Love It” features in possibly the best episode of Girls so far - the one where Hannah takes coke to write an article about it - which is cool in itself. It’s my favourite song that’s been in the charts recently, and you’ve gotta be pretty cool to not care that you’ve just crashed your car into a bridge.
Huddle Formation - The Go! Team
There was a night called Confessions every Friday night while I was in my first year of university. It was free entry before 11 and there were student discount on drinks, amazing! The DJ took requests and as long as he liked the song and had it with him would play whatever you wrote down. Every week me and my housemate would request this song, and despite the fact that pretty much every week it cleared the dance floor because no one else knew or liked the song, the DJ played it because he did like it too. Having the same, niché, possibly bad, music taste as the DJ of the club you’re in = COOL!
Rock Lobster - B-52s
I’m not sure why I’ve included this song. My brother and I had a strange dance to it when we were younger, which probably isn’t very cool. It’s strangely mesmerizing though and I like that. Or maybe it’s just hypnotized me into thinking I do? If that’s the case it’s definitely cool!
You Can Make Him Like You - The Hold Steady
“There’s always other boys and you can make them like you” you know why you can make them like you? Because you’re so cool, that’s why.
Atomic - Blondie
Having done my research it turns out this Atomic is actually about nuclear war which is decisively uncool, although given the name maybe should have been more obvious. Blondie and especially Debbie Harry are incredibly cool though. The song features the film Trainspotting, when Renton first sees Diane, despite being underage she’s the coolest person in there and this song always reminds me of that moment.
Spiderwebs - No Doubt
When I was 16 I was in a band with my friends and, like Gwen Stefani, was the only girl. I thought I was kinda cool because of it, but I didn’t pull it off anywhere near as well as she does, probably because she has major musical talent where I have none. I like this song because of the pace changes and also because of the steel drums, steel drums are well cool.
Well Measured Vice - The Correspondents
If you ever have the chance to see The Correspondents live, do it! They’re amazing, and once you’ve seen them you’ll understand why I’ve included them in this playlist, they have cool music, cool dances, cool costumes, cool everything. I have Well Measured Vice on vinyl, the sleeve of which is a frame of the hand drawn animation that promoted the single which was drawn by Mr Bruce, the front man of the band, definitely the coolest album art work I own.
Drop It Like It’s Hot - Snoop Dogg
When Drop It Like It’s Hot came out in 2004 (WHAT?!) I thought it was super cool, and that clicking along to it made me super cool as well. I was probably wrong, but that hasn’t stopped me. I also saw Snoop Dogg live a couple of years ago and was pretty much blown away by his cool-factor, at the end of his set he told all the ladies that he loved us. That’s right, Snoop Dogg told me he loves me.
The Chariot - The Cat Empire
The Cat Empire have named themselves after an empire of cats. As we all know, cats are the coolest creatures, this alone sets them above the rest. Were their name different this song would still feature, it reminds me of my friends, having a good time and dancing, what could be cooler than that?
